From 14 to 17 July 2026, Mr. Yahya Wongkanya, First Secretary and Head of Economic Affairs led a delegation comprising representatives of the Mozambique Halal Commission (MHC) and the Mozambican Muslim Association of Entrepreneurs and Business Owners (AMEEM) on a visit to Thailand. The visit aimed to study Thailand’s halal certification system and the application of science and technology in the development of the country’s halal industry.

 

During the visit, the delegation met with Dr. Pornpimon Mahamad, Director of the Halal Science Center, Chulalongkorn University, together with Dr. Anat Denyingyot, Deputy Director, and members of the Center’s staff. The delegation also toured the Center and received a briefing on the use of science, technology and laboratory analysis to examine raw materials and production processes and to support the development of halal products. Both sides also exchanged experiences on human resource development and Thailand’s halal science ecosystem.

 

The delegation also met with Mr. Kan Hongnoi, a representative of the Halal Affairs Department of the Central Islamic Council of Thailand (CICOT). The delegation received information on Thailand’s procedures and measures for halal inspection and certification, as well as the supervision of business establishments, monitoring of production processes and verification of the status of halal-certified products.

 

During the meetings with both institutions, the delegation exchanged views on opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Thai and Mozambican halal organisations, particularly in human resource development, knowledge exchange, scientific analysis and the enhancement of halal certification standards in line with international recognition.

 

The visit provided the Mozambican delegation with a better understanding of Thailand’s strengths in combining Islamic principles with science, technology and an effective regulatory system. This will provide an important foundation for further cooperation between Thailand and Mozambique in halal standards and the halal industry.

 

The activity was supported by the Department of International Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and formed part of the Thailand–Africa Initiative (TAI), which aims to promote concrete economic cooperation between Thailand and African countries.
