On 2 September 2026, Mr. Bancha Yuenyongchongcharoen, Ambassador of Thailand to Maputo, met with Mr. Roberto Mito Albino, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries of Mozambique, on the sidelines of FACIM 2026. Mr. Faruque Omar Mussá Faquirá, Deputy Director of the Department of Asia and Oceania, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Mozambique, also attended the meeting.
Both sides discussed ways to strengthen agricultural cooperation between Thailand and Mozambique, particularly in rice trade, enhancing Mozambique’s rice production capacity, knowledge and technology transfer, as well as the use of small-scale agricultural machinery suitable for Mozambique’s smallholder farmers.
The Minister reaffirmed Mozambique’s continued interest in importing rice from Thailand, while expressing the view that rice trade should proceed in parallel with efforts to strengthen domestic production capacity. He also proposed broader cooperation covering rice production, agriculture, aquaculture, agricultural machinery, and the transfer of technology and expertise from Thailand.
The Ambassador reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to support such cooperation, highlighting Thailand’s expertise in rice varieties, production technology, water management, and agricultural machinery. In addition, Thailand’s private sector, through the Thai Agritech Consortium (TAC), a network of Thai companies specializing in agricultural machinery and technology, stands ready to support machinery demonstrations, farmer training, and the development of local networks for distributors, spare parts, and after-sales services in Mozambique.
Thailand and Mozambique have maintained continuous cooperation in the agricultural sector. Past initiatives include training on rice production under the Third Country Training Programme (TCTP) jointly implemented by the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), as well as cooperation on rice demonstration plots and integrated farming in Boane and Chókwè.
