On 10 April 2025, the Royal Thai Embassy in Maputo organized the Songkran or the Thai New Year Celebration 2025 at the Embassy’s premises. The event was attended by the Thai community and families in Mozambique. As “Songkran in Thailand, a traditional Thai New Year festival” was inscribed in 2023 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the celebration was arranged to preserve this precious Thai culture and to promote unity among the Thai people in Mozambique.

On this occasion, the Royal Thai Embassy in Maputo invited Thai citizens and families in Mozambique to sprinkle water onto the Buddha statue bestowed upon the Embassy by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The buddha statue is a 20-inch-tall, 10-kilogram metal Buddha statue in the "Leela" (walking) pose. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over its consecration ceremony at the ordination hall of Wat Suthatthepwararam on 22 July 2023. Her Royal Highness graciously bestowed these statues upon various Thai institutions in Thailand and overseas, with the noble intention of bringing auspiciousness, happiness and well-being as well as prosperity to our nation, religions, the Monarchy, the Thai people and the people of the world.
